REACHING HYPERSPACE FASTER THAN BEFORE

Combining Star Wars-inspired design elements with the technology of the wireless G502 X Plus, the G502 X Plus Millenium Falcon delivers the perfect mouse for gaming and navigating digital galaxies.

The G502 X Plus serves as the base for this model, which integrates Star Wars graphics and new effects for the mouse’s different operating modes. The design team worked closely with Disney to create a mouse that would reflect the Millennium Falcon’s flight through the stars. After studying the film and assets shared by Disney, I developed a series of animations that would channel the look and feel of the famed Millenium Falcon starship.

THE MILLENIUM FALCON

Scenes from Star Wars were an essential resource in designing animations for the G502 X Plus millennium Falcon. Disney-provided assets ensured that we would stay true to the movie’s own effects. I looked specifically at the lighting effects in the film to develop a series of animations that would capture the aesthetic of the millennium Falcon and its journeys through hyperspace.

Using Lightsync RBG, I produced effects that would both emulate the Millennium Falcon’s own lighting as well as represent the mouse’s different modes–startup, active, and passive. These parallel goals guided the lighting strategy for the G502 X Plus millennium Falcon. The final design is a mouse whose animation echoes the legendary starship’s dynamic energy.

FROM ICONIC NARRATIVE TO EFFECTS

Unlike the original G502 X Plus, this model has three distinct millennium Falcon-inspired animations determined by activity mode. Lightsync RGB uses 8-LED, full-spectrum RGB lighting to produce custom animations for the startup, active (default mode), and passive modes.

The existing LED lights on the surface of the G502 X Plus were reprogrammed to mimic the Millennium Falcon’s distinct lighting during different phases of flight. The mouse’s startup effect is a bright illumination that radiates outwards to reference the thrusters of the Millennium Falcon launching forward. When active, a gradient cyan light pulses steadily to signal that the mouse is in use.

After a minute of non-use, a change in animation indicates that the mouse is entering hyperdrive–or passive–mode. The hyperdrive effect draws inspiration from the millennium Falcon entrance into hyperspace. The radial lights generated from the starship’s movement are simulated by the blue lights on the mouse. These lights emanate outwards to replicate the on-screen lights that have come to represent the Falcon’s faster-than-light speed. The passive effect plays for five minutes before entering deep sleep, when all lights turn off. Once users press a button, the mouse returns to its default active mode.

The G502 X Plus millennium Falcon relies on Lightsync RGB for active play detection to help conserve battery. Unique to the G502 X Plus models is the animation’s ability to sense the user’s activity. Lights obstructed by the user’s hand power off once covered. Upon release of the mouse, ~50% of the eight LEDs on the right side of the mouse turn back on in response to the user’s movement. With RGB on, the G502 X Plus achieves up to 37 hours of battery life. Gamers can further personalize the effects through the use of G Hub software.

Equipped with these enhanced features, the G502 X Plus millennium Falcon offers a distinctive user experience that transports gamers to their very own virtual universe.
